FIVB Scoresheet Training

With the National League competitions starting in the next few weeks I would like to offer the opportunity for some scoresheet training / refresher training.

This would enable anyone to be able to competently score a National League match, using the FIVB / National League scoresheet.

The official scoresheet can look daunting at first glance but, genuinely, with an hour’s training and support it will become crystal clear!

NVL teams should ensure that they have sufficient trained and competent scorers to be able undertake scorer duties for next season.

There have been times when a scorer has not turned up and someone is “press ganged” into doing it, making it stressful for them and challenging for the match officials.

This would an online session, either Teams or Zoom, probably a midweek evening.

Let me know who / how many people you may be interested in sending.

And it is FREE!!

Let me know ASAP and I can look to get it organised.

Best regards

VE Grade 4 Referee Course – Cancelled

Sadly the Grade 4 Referee course scheduled for Saturday at Urmston Grammar has had to be cancelled.

There were only six learners signed up by the closing date of Friday at 4pm.

Despite efforts to encourage more, and extending the deadline to Monday 9am, we still did not get near the minimum number of learners to make the course viable.

Disappointing, of course. And with great thanks to Howard Ainsworth and Urmston Grammar for agreeing to host.

Hopefully there will be sufficient interest when we try to run another course in NW.

We have organised a Grade 4 Referee Course on 7 September, at Urmston Grammar School, in Manchester from 09:30 – 18:00.

We need a min of 14 candidates to be able to run the course, and the closing date is 30 Aug.

The course can be booked through the following link:
VolleyZone courses portal

Otherwise let me know directly if you, or anyone else, may be interested.

We will look to hold another course in October, once the university teams are back.

Brian Kendall Cup 2024

Men – Saturday 27th April
Women – Sunday 28th April

A rousing success and a great way to commemorate Brian Kendall who was the guiding light of the Merseyside League for so many years.

Men’s Competition
Winners: Fairfield
Runners-up: Isle of Man

This men’s competition was a real tribute to Brian Kendall’s memory. The playing standard was high, the matches very competitive (many ending one-set all), the atmosphere in the sports hall was terrific and the noise had the sports hall bouncing.
Special mention for the junior Liverpool team who played some outstanding attacking volleyball, came through their very difficult pool after taking a set off Fairfield and recovering after a bad first set stumble against Oldham. They were unfortunate not to make the final, losing out to Isle of Man by one point over the two sets.

Isle of Man teams have become great supporters of our MVL tournaments. They brought a strong men’s team on Saturday and won Pool B with some ease but they really never had a chance in the final against Fairfield who by this stage, sniffing victory, really had the bit between their teeth. How do they do it? How does this no longer young group of Fairfield players keep going? Where do they keep finding the enthusiasm and the will to win? Some of their pool games were a real battle but they breezed through the semi-final against Prescot Lynx and took Isle of Man to pieces in the final with a devastating first set.
We had to juggle with the pools/ match program because one team didn’t show up on the day. That left us with one pool of 3 and really short-changed Titans 2 who’d been recruited to balance the entry numbers and ended up with only two matches.

Women’s Competition
Winners: Amazons A
Runners-up: Amazons B

We had a full compliment of eight teams for the Women’s BK Cup on Sunday.
The competition was dominated by the two Amazons teams who won their respective pools and semi-finals but had a ding-dong battle in the final where Amazons B took the first set 21-20 but were 12-14 behind when the buzzer went in set 2, making Amazons A the winner of the competition by 1 point.
Prescot Lynx and Warrington Wolves – 2024 winners of MVL divisions 1 and 2 lost in their semi-finals but played off a close 3/4th match – again one set all with Wolves taking 3rd place on points difference.

Nice to have Isle of Man ladies again showing good support for our competitions but on this occasion not getting through to the semi-finals.

Breach of League Rules – Chester White Eagles v Prescot Lynx

A complaint from Prescot Lynx relating to the use of illegal players in two matches against Chester White Eagles has been upheld by the MVL Committee. The photographic evidence provided shows that White Eagles committed a serious breach of league rules by using three ineligible players and have chosen to conceal this by entering false names on the scoresheets submitted to the league.

Judgement

The MVL committee has consequently resolved to nullify the results of these games and to award both matches to Prescot Lynx by three sets to nil, 25-0, 25-0, 25-0 with Chester White Eagles receiving 0 points.

In addition White Eagles are warned that any further use of these named players (or any evidence that they have been used in other matches) will result in the team being expelled from the league and the results of all their matches in the 2023-24 season expunged from the records.

The three players concerned, Volodymy Ferniuk, Santiago Quinn, and Jacob Lumb plus the captain Mac Michalowski who signed off the scoresheet and is equally culpable, are all banned from taking part in any further matches in the 2023-24 season and will will not be permitted to register as MVL players in the coming 2024-25 season.

*UPDATED* Unregistered Players Penalty

UPDATE 04 Feb 2024

Please see the letter from the league secretary below regarding the introduction of a penalty for unregistered players.

MVL Player registration enforcement.pdf

Penalty will now be introduced from 4th February 2024.

29 Dec 2023

Although conformity has generally been very good, there have been a few occasions since the start of the season where teams have played unregistered or wrongly registered players in matches.  We have been lenient so far by just issuing warnings to the associated teams.

However please take note that as from the 1st January, any such incidents will be penalised with the loss of 1 point per incident.
